5 Days In May

This is a WSO (We shall overcome) event. WSO began in 2014 in response to the appearance of Food banks in our towns and cities the result of Cameron’s austerity, the idea was that people would put on gigs in their local communities, musicians would perform for free and gig goers would be encouraged to give a bit of change to support the food banks.

In early 2022 the Home Office decided to open two asylum hotels for single gentlemen in Barrow. The residents are mostly from Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Eritrea, Yemen and Ethiopia. While they are waiting for their asylum application to be processed they are not allowed access to benefits or English classes and they cannot work.

We are working in collaboration with Furness Multicultural Community Forum, St Marks and the Salvation Army to provide activities and clothes. Specifically we run a coffee and chat session on a Tuesday afternoon and English classes on a Thursday afternoon.

Coffee and Chat

We have a wonderful “drinks and chat” session on Tuesday evenings at the Hope and Anchor in Ulverston.

Come and join us at the Hope!

Ulverston – 6.00 to 8.00pm

The sessions have given Ukrainians who have recently arrived, host families, potential host families and volunteers a chance to chat, swap contact details and ask questions. We have been able to help to resolve some problems and see that some Ukrainians are meeting up outside the sessions and accessing English classes already. A good start!

ESOL

Our new friends are improving their English with “English for Speakers of Other Languages” (ESOL)

Come along and help out!
